But I’m here to tell you today: Your voice is not a common thing. There is a temptation to believe that to be "relatable" or "forceful," we must adopt the grit and the grime of the language around us. We think a "harmless word" adds impact to our point. But we must ask ourselves: Who are we reflecting?
When we reach for the "corrupting talk" mentioned in Ephesians 4:29, we aren't just using a word; we are dimming our testimony. We are making the message of Jesus look common. Our speech is the front line of our witness. If our mouths mirror the world, how will the world ever see that we have been transformed by the Word?
The Bible doesn’t stutter when it comes to our speech. The Greek word used for "corrupting" or "unwholesome" is sapros. It literally means rotten, putrid, or of no value. Think about that. When we cuss, we aren't just being "edgy." We are offering something rotten to the people around us. We are taking the miracle of human communication and turning it into something of "little or no value." Is it necessary? No. Is it helpful? Never. Is it God-honoring? The Scripture makes it unambiguously clear.
The question isn't whether "times have changed" or if "meanings evolve." The question is: Does God tell us to stop?
The answer is a resounding Yes. But he doesn't just tell us what to stop; he tells us what to start. We are called to be a people whose words are:
Full of Grace: Giving life to those who hear.
Seasoned with Salt: Preserving truth and adding the flavor of the Kingdom.
Wisdom and Praise: Reflecting a heart that is anchored in something eternal.
I challenge you today to put away the anger, the malice, and the "obscene talk" from your mouth. Don't settle for the gutter when you were made for the heavens. Your speech should be so distinct, so gracious, and so full of light that people can’t help but notice the difference.
Let us be a people who don't just speak, but who bless. Let our words be the bridge that leads others to Christ, not the wall that blocks their view.
Choose today to honor the Lord with your tongue. You are an Ambassador for Christ.
